"Bill Hitchcock was one of America's great financiers, but having sold off his banks, he now works for the government - the Saudi Arabian government. Hired as the official financial advisor to the kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Hitchcock finds himself in control of hundreds of billions of dollars, and is now one of the most powerful men in the world. While a good portion of the book is devoted to details of economics, described in such a style as to blend in with the fiction, the main plot of the novel centers around the Shah of Iran - considered a fool by some, a madman by others. The Shah's plan to take over the middle east involves obtaining nuclear weapons by hiring the best scientist in the field. Complications ensue when Hitchcock finds himself romantically involved with this scientist's daughter, and slowly begins to pick up on the details of the Shah's plan. "

The fifteen streets by Catherine Cookson
BUY / COMRAR

Catherine Cookson was one of the world's most beloved writers. Her books have sold millions of copies, and her characters and their stories have captured the imaginations of readers around the globe. Now, available for the first time in this country, comes one of Cookson's earliest and most stirring historical romances: The Fifteen Streets. John O'Brien lives in a world where surviving is a continual struggle. He works long hours at the docks to help support his parents' large family. Many other families in the Fifteen Streets have already given up and descended into a dismal state of grinding poverty, but the O'Briens continue to strive for a world they are only rarely allowed to glimpse. Then John O'Brien meets Mary Llewellyn, a beautiful young teacher who belongs to that other world. What begins as a casual conversation over tea quickly blossoms into a rare love that should have been perfect. Fate steps in, however, when John is accused of fathering the child of a local girl, and Mary's parents forbid her to see him. The couple begins to realize that the gulf of the Fifteen Streets between them is a chasm they could never bridge -- or might they still find a way? In these pages Catherine Cookson displays the irresistible plotting, scene-setting, and characterization that have made her a recognized master of historical and romance fiction. Fans of her novels, with their larger themes of romantic love and class conflict, will be delighted to find that even at the beginning of her illustrious career, Cookson had the power to captivate audiences. Filled with passion and compelling drama, The Fifteen Streets is a rare treat for lovers of romantic fiction.

Howard Fast again brings to life a cast of characters whose lives become a portrait of their time. Listeners will witness the events in the lives of the children of Dan Lavette: Follow daughter Barbara Lavette, a strong and magnetic personality, from tragedy to final fulfillment; observe the elder son, Tom, as he quests for and finally succumbs to his own unscrupulous drive for power; and feel the conflict as the younger son, Joe, struggles between dedication to his medical work to the poor and having no emotional strength left for his beautiful wife left alone.

Second generation by Howard Fast
BUY / COMPRAR

With the publication of The Immigrants, "a most wonderful book," according to Harlan Ellison in the Los Angeles Times, Howard Fast once again proved himself to be one of this country's most popular authors.  In Second Generation, Fast continues the story of Dan Lavette, the young Italian who lost his parents but launched a stormy and brilliant career as a result of the great San Francisco earthquake of 1906. This latest chapter encompasses the dramatic sweep of history from the Depression years to the close of World War II.  In this classic novel the central figure is Barbara Lavette, the beautiful daughter of Dan and his aristocratic first wife, Jean. Troubled by the conflicts of her dual inheritance and scornful of her mother's social world, Barbara sets out to build her own life in her own way -- a way that leads her to a Europe on the brink of Na zi terror, to love and tragedy, to the farthest reaches of a global war, and ultimately to a deeper understanding of herself.  It is the rare novelist who can create a world with such empathy and compassion that the reader actually comes to share the loves and emotions of its characters. Howard Fast is one of them.

N BY E by Rockwell Kent - First Edition

N by E

by Rockwell Kent
New York Brewer & Warren - 1930
FIRST EDITION
HARD COVER

COMPRAR AQUI
o escribiendo a ayconstanza@gmail.com

When artist, illustrator, writer, and adventurer Rockwell Kent first published N by E in a limited edition in 1930, his account of a voyage on a 33-foot cutter from New York Harbor to the rugged shores of Greenland quickly became a collectors' item. Little wonder, for readers are immediately drawn to Kent's vivid descriptions of the experience; we share "the feeling of wind and wet and cold, of lifting seas and steep descents, of rolling over as the wind gusts hit," and the sound "of wind in the shrouds, of hard spray flung on a drum-tight canvas, of rushing water at the scuppers, of the gale shearing a tormented sea."

When the ship sinks in a storm-swept fjord within 50 miles of its destination, the story turns to the stranding and subsequent rescue of the three-man crew, salvage of the vessel, and life among native Greenlanders. Magnificently illustrated by Kent's wood-block prints and narrated in his poetic and highly entertaining style, this tale of the perils of killer nor'easters, treacherous icebergs, and impenetrable fog -- and the joys of sperm whales breaching or dawn unmasking a longed-for landfall -- is a rare treat for old salts and landlubbers alike.

ROCKWELL KENT (1882-1971) was one of America’s most celebrated graphic artists. At the height of his career, during the 1930’s and 1940’s, Kent’s artwork appeared virtually everywhere. Although his illustrations for The Complete Works of William Shakespeare and Moby Dick are perhaps his most famous artistic achievements, Kent also created the “random house” that, despite revision through the years, has been the colophon of that company since its inception in 1928. A highly vocal political activist, Kent’s refusal to comply with McCarthy’s Committee on Un-American Activities and his subsequent denunciation of the Vietnam War resulted in his general dismissal from the art world. Kent’s travel books, which include Wilderness, Voyaging, N by E, Salamina , and Greenland Journal, have all appeared in limited editions since his death-a tribute to their perennial appeal.

Jeannette Winterson
Traduccion de Elena Ruis
EDITORIAL SUDAMERICANA - Buenos Aires - 1989
